How to Talk to God (Even If You've Never Prayed Before)

A lot of people want to talk to God and quietly assume they're doing it wrong before they start. They picture a formal voice, the right posture, words they never learned. So they don't start at all.

If that's you, here's the good news up front: talking to God is not a performance. It's a conversation. And conversations start the way they always do. You say something true.

Start where you actually are

You don't have to clean yourself up first. You don't have to know theology. You can talk to God in the car, in the shower, in the two minutes before your alarm goes off. You can start with, "I don't really know how to do this." That counts. That's already talking to God.

Scripture puts it simply:

"Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you." — Matthew 7:7 (KJV)

Notice there's no instruction about how well to ask. Just ask.

Say it the way you'd say it to someone who loves you

The biggest shift for most people is realizing they can use their own words. Plain words. Short sentences. If you're grateful, say thank you. If you're scared, say you're scared. If you're angry, you can say that too. The Psalms are full of people telling God exactly how they feel, including the parts that aren't polite.

A simple shape that helps when your mind goes blank:

  • Thank. Name one thing, however small.
  • Tell. Say what's actually on your mind today.
  • Ask. For help, for strength, for someone you love.
  • Listen. Sit quietly for a minute before you move on.

That's it. No script required.

Make room for the quiet

Talking to God isn't only talking. Some of the conversation happens when you stop.

"Be still, and know that I am God." — Psalm 46:10 (KJV)

Stillness can feel awkward at first. Try one minute. Phone face down. Breathe. You're not waiting for a voice from the sky. You're giving your own noise a chance to settle so you can notice what's already there.

When it feels like nobody's listening

Almost everyone who prays has days when it feels like talking to the ceiling. That feeling is common, and it isn't proof that you're alone.

"The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart." — Psalm 34:18 (KJV)

Nigh means near. Close enough to hear the smallest, tiredest version of you.

A prayer to start the conversation

Lord, thank You for hearing me — and thank You for the far bigger thing, that You answer. Today I will listen more than I speak. I will leave room for whatever You are whispering under the noise. I know now what this is: not a monologue, but a conversation between us. That changes everything about my morning. I am not talking into the dark. I am talking with You. Amen.

— "Not a Monologue," from the I Talk With God daily collection. Our members received this prayer on August 30.

Keep it going: one conversation a day

Talking to God once helps. Talking to God every day changes the ground you stand on. The hard part isn't the words. It's remembering to show up.

That's why I Talk With God exists. Every morning we send one prayer, by text and email, written by people, not by AI, so the conversation is already started before your day gets loud. It takes about two minutes.
