Does God Hear Me? A Prayer for When Heaven Feels Quiet

You pray, and the room stays the same. No warm feeling. No answer. Just your own voice and the hum of the refrigerator. After enough of those mornings, a quiet question shows up: is anyone actually listening?
If you've asked that, you're in good company. Some of the most honest prayers in the Bible were asked from exactly this place.
The short answer
Scripture doesn't hedge on this one.
"The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth."
Psalm 145:18 (KJV)
All them that call. Not the ones who pray well, or often, or with the right words. In truth means honestly, which is the one thing you can always bring, even on a day you feel nothing.
Quiet is not the same as absent
We usually judge whether we've been heard by how we feel afterward. But feelings are weather. They come and go. Being known goes deeper than that.
"O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off."
Psalm 139:1-2 (KJV)
Your sitting down and your getting up. Thoughts you haven't said yet. Nothing about you is getting lost on the way.
When you don't know how to ask
Sometimes the silence is on our side: we've run out of words. That's covered too.
"...the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered."
Romans 8:26 (KJV)
Even a sigh is heard as a prayer.
Keep showing up
The psalmist's answer to a quiet heaven wasn't to stop. It was to come back the next morning, and watch.
"My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up."
Psalm 5:3 (KJV)
Will look up. Expecting something, even before it arrives.
A prayer for the quiet days
This is a prayer about closeness. On a quiet day it may sound like it belongs to someone else. Pray it anyway, as a statement of where this conversation is going.
Lord, thank You for this closeness. I can actually feel it now. You taught me that prayer is not a performance. It is a gift, a practice, and most of all a conversation between us. My faith is more alive, more confident, more complete than it has ever been. And I will live today in a way that shows it, not just says it. Amen.
"The Closest I Have Ever Been," from the I Talk With God daily collection. Our members received this prayer on September 21.
Try this for one week
- Same time, same place, every morning for seven days.
- Say one true sentence to God. Then sit quietly for one minute.
- Write down anything you notice: a thought, a verse, a moment in the day that felt like an answer.
"Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth."
Psalm 46:10 (KJV)
A conversation that keeps going
The hardest part of prayer is the mornings it feels like nothing. I Talk With God sends one prayer every morning, by text and email, written by people, not by AI, so you're never starting from a blank page. Start with a free week.

God is always reaching. Are you?
