A Prayer for a Sick Friend

The text comes in, or the phone call. A friend is sick. Maybe it's a diagnosis with a long name, maybe a surgery, maybe a slow illness that has been wearing them down for a while. You want to do something, and it's hard to know what.
Praying for them is something. It's not the only thing, but it's a real one, and it's always available.
Friendship was made for this
There's a reason hard seasons show you who your people are.
"A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity."
Proverbs 17:17 (KJV)
Born for adversity. Being the friend who stays close when it's hard is not an interruption of friendship. It's what friendship is for.
Ask plainly for healing
You don't need special words to pray for someone who is sick. Say their name. Say what you're hoping for. Scripture models a prayer that is short and direct:
"Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise."
Jeremiah 17:14 (KJV)
Pray it for them by name: Heal her, Lord. Heal him.
"For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the LORD."
Jeremiah 30:17 (KJV)
Pray for strength, too
Long illness is heavy in a way that's hard to see from the outside: the waiting rooms, the not knowing, the days that look the same. Pray for your friend's strength to get through today, not just for the finish line.
A prayer for your friend
This prayer is written in the first person, from inside a hard season. You can pray it on your friend's behalf, pray it with them, or send it to them on a day they don't have words of their own.
Thank You for being here on a day when I cannot see the end of this. I have stopped asking when. I do not know how long this goes, and the not knowing is heavier than the thing itself. But You said do not be afraid, because You are with me. Do not look around scared, because You are my God. You said You would make me strong, and help me, and hold me up with Your own hand. So that is what I am standing on this morning. Not a finish line. I put my faith and trust in You. Give me strength. Amen.
"I Can't See the End of This," from the I Talk With God daily collection. Our members received this prayer on August 8.
The promise it is built on:
"Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."
Isaiah 41:10 (KJV)
Ways to show up this week
- Tell them you're praying, and ask what they'd like you to pray for. Then do it.
- Offer one specific thing. "Can I drop off dinner Thursday?" beats "Let me know if you need anything."
- Keep showing up after the first week. Cards and calls slow down; the illness often doesn't.
A gift that arrives every morning
Sometimes the best thing you can give a friend in a hard season is something steady. I Talk With God sends one prayer every morning, by text and email, written by people, not by AI. You can start a free week for yourself, or give a friend a year of morning prayers.
If you're carrying fear about what comes next, A Prayer for Anxiety may help. And for the long haul, read A Prayer for Strength.
