A Prayer After Losing Your Job
Losing a job lands in three places at once. The money. The routine. And the quiet question underneath: what am I worth now?
If you just got the call, or the email, or the meeting with HR you saw coming for weeks, take a breath. This page is for the first hard days.
It's okay that this hurts
Work is more than a paycheck. It's where you go every morning, who you talk to, what you say when someone asks what you do. When that disappears, the loss is real. You don't have to be fine yet.
"Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee." — Psalm 55:22 (KJV)
Sustain is the key word. Not "fix it by Friday." Hold you up while it gets worked out.
One day at a time is not a cliché today
The mind races ahead: the mortgage in two months, the kids' plans, the résumé you haven't touched in years. Scripture offers a boundary:
"Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof." — Matthew 6:34 (KJV)
Today has enough in it. Make today's list. Leave next month's for next month.
Ask plainly
Ask for what you need. Out loud if you can. A job. Wisdom about the next move. Peace at 2 a.m. The right person to call.
"Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you." — Matthew 7:7 (KJV)
Then knock. Send the message. Make the call. Prayer and action were never opposites.
Remember who you are
Your title was never your identity.
"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil." — Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV)
A prayer for this week
Thank You for what is already in my hands this morning. It is not everything, and I feel the gap — the space between what I need and what I actually have. But You told me to go after You first and let the rest get handled. So I am starting there. Before I chase the gap, I am coming here to ask You for Your leadership and guidance, and to know I already have what I came for: peace in Your grace. Amen.
— "The Gap Between What I Need and What I Have," from the I Talk With God daily collection. Our members received this prayer on August 10.
A small practice for a hard season
Structure helps when the calendar suddenly empties. Keep a morning start time. Get dressed. Begin the day with two minutes of prayer before you open the job boards.
That's what I Talk With God does: one prayer every morning, by text and email, written by people, not by AI. Something steady to start the day with when a lot isn't steady. Start with a free week.
If fear is the loudest thing right now, A Prayer for Anxiety may help tonight. And if you have nothing left, read A Prayer for Strength.
