A Short Morning Prayer for Work

Most workdays start the same way. The alarm. The phone. The inbox. Before you've said a word to anyone, the day has already started talking to you.

A short morning prayer for work flips that order. Two minutes, before the day gets a vote.

Why before work, not after

By noon you're reacting. In the morning you still get to choose the posture you walk in with: patient or rushed, generous or guarded. Scripture treats each morning as a fresh start:

"It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed… They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness." — Lamentations 3:22–23 (KJV)

Yesterday's meeting doesn't get to set today's tone.

Work as something you offer

Some days your job feels meaningful. Some days it's spreadsheets and a difficult boss. Either way, there's a way of doing it that makes it more than a task:

"And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men." — Colossians 3:23 (KJV)

Heartily. Not perfectly. With your whole self in it.

Ask for wisdom, specifically

Most workdays need wisdom more than anything else: what to say, what to let go, what to push back on.

"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him." — James 1:5 (KJV)

Upbraideth not means He doesn't scold you for asking. Ask for today's.

A two-minute routine

  1. Before you open email, sit for one minute. Breathe.
  2. Name the day. The meeting, the deadline, the person you're dreading.
  3. Pray the short prayer below.
  4. Pick one intention. "Patient with my team." "Honest in that meeting."

"This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it." — Psalm 118:24 (KJV)

A short morning prayer for work

Heavenly Father, thank You for the eyes to see this work differently. When asked to break rocks, some see the task as strenuous, arduous, and thankless. I choose to see it as the necessary steps toward building a cathedral. I will view the work in front of me as completing the task You've assigned in building something beautiful and meaningful. It does not matter whether I can see what it all adds up to. You see it. And not one hour of what I do today is wasted in You — not one. Amen.

Make it automatic

The hardest part of a morning prayer is remembering it on the busy days. I Talk With God sends one prayer every morning, by text and email, written by people, not by AI, so it's waiting before the inbox is. Start with a free week.
