A Prayer for When You Don't Have the Words

You sit down to pray and nothing comes. Maybe it's grief. Maybe it's exhaustion. Maybe it's been so long that you don't know where to begin. You want to talk to God, and your mind just goes quiet.

This is more common than anyone admits. And it doesn't mean you're doing it wrong.

The Bible saw this coming

One of the most comforting lines in all of scripture is written for exactly this moment:

"…the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered." — Romans 8:26 (KJV)

Groanings which cannot be uttered. Sounds without words. The verse doesn't say you'll find the right words. It says you're covered even when you don't.

Your silence is still a prayer

When words fail, a lot of people stop. Try this instead: stay. Sit with it. Say the one word you have, even if it's just "God" or "help." Put your hand on your chest and breathe. That is not an empty moment. It's an honest one.

"The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit." — Psalm 34:18 (KJV)

Three ways to pray without finding words

• Borrow them. Read a psalm out loud, slowly. People have been praying those words for three thousand years. You're allowed to use them.
• Name, don't explain. "My dad." "The money." "Tomorrow." One word per worry. God doesn't need the paragraph.
• Let someone else start. A prayer written by someone else can open the door. You'll often find your own words show up halfway through.

A prayer you can borrow

God, thank You for meeting me exactly where I stood — not where I should have been. You did not wait for me to clean myself up first. Faith does not require perfect words, or a perfect person. It requires an open heart, and mine is open this morning. I am closer to You today than I was a week ago, and I can feel it. That is not a promise for later. That is right now. Amen.
